What We Do

Support for the family, alongside the treatment

Family Circle offers five kinds of support to families affected by a loved one’s mental-health challenge. Everything below is free to the family, and none of it replaces professional medical or mental-health care.

Practical family support

Help with the ordinary things that stop working when a household is in crisis.

During an acute period, the tasks that hold a home together are the first to fall away: meals, rides, laundry, groceries, the school run. Family Circle helps families identify what is slipping and organizes practical help where we can, drawing on volunteers and community partners.

We also help a family think through the week ahead: who is doing what, what can be paused, and where an extra pair of hands would make the biggest difference.

Care packages

A package at the door that says someone noticed.

Our care packages are prepared for the family members who are rarely asked how they are doing: a spouse, a parent, a sibling, a child. They typically include comfort items, something for the children, practical household items, and written material a family can read when they have a quiet moment.

Packages are never a substitute for care. Families consistently tell us that the message matters as much as the contents: someone outside this house knows what we are carrying.

Psychoeducation for families

Plain-language education about what a family is living through.

Families are frequently handed clinical information about a patient and nothing at all about themselves. We provide accessible, non-clinical education on what commonly happens inside a family during and after a crisis: how children react, what the weeks after discharge often look like, why the hardest weeks are sometimes the ones after the emergency ends.

This material is educational and general. It does not diagnose, and it does not replace guidance from a treating professional.

Referrals and connections

Pointing a family toward appropriate professional and community help.

Many families come to us not knowing which door to knock on. We help them understand the kinds of help that exist, and connect them with appropriate clinicians, community organizations, and support services where we can.

We refer; we do not treat. Where a need falls outside what we or our partners can offer, we say so plainly rather than leave a family waiting.

Resource navigation and advocacy

Help making sense of the next step.

Systems are difficult to navigate while exhausted. We help families prepare questions before a discharge meeting, understand what to ask a provider, keep track of who to call, and identify the single next step that matters most this week.

Our role is to help a family advocate for themselves with more information and less isolation.

What we do not provide

  • Emergency or crisis response
  • Psychiatric or medical treatment, diagnosis, or medication management
  • Therapy or counseling by Family Circle staff
  • Inpatient, residential, or housing services
  • Legal advice

Family Circle provides family support, education, resources, and referrals. Family Circle is not an emergency or crisis response service and does not replace professional medical or mental health care. If you or someone else is experiencing an immediate emergency, contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis resource in your area.
